Organic Earl Grey Black Tea

compostable-tea-packaging-1.jpg

This organic, Fair Trade Certified version of the classic Earl Grey does not disappoint. It has a correct balance of flavoring which results in a piquant and refreshing true Earl Grey organic black tea taste. Made fashionable by the Prime Minister of England Earl Grey (1830-1834), Earl Grey tea is traditionally a blend of organic Chinese tea flavored with the oil from the Asian citrus fruit, bergamot. Now, some of the best bergamot in the world hails from Italy, where the botanical was transplanted generations ago. For our organic Earl Grey Black Tea we blend the oil from an Italian grown bergamot with a bolder organic black tea from India for an Earl Grey lover's delight!

Ingredients: organic and Fair Trade Certified Indian black tea and organic bergamot flavor

What are Flavored Teas?

bergamot-citrus-flavor.jpg

Our delicious flavored teas use the same top-quality organic tea that we offer in our unflavored varieties, but are blended with pieces of real fruit, spices, flowers, and 100% natural flavors. When blending our teas, our goal is to create a cup that balances the taste of the tea with the flavors of the additional ingredients so that neither one overpowers. All of the natural flavors we use are either extracts taken directly from the botanical ingredient, or extracted using 100% GMO-free grain alcohol as a solvent. You can rest assured that none of the flavors used in our blends are synthetically or artificially derived, and do not use artificial preservatives.

Steeping Instructions

earl-grey-tea-steeping-instructions.jpg

At Arbor Teas, we believe tea should be brewed to suit your personal taste. We’re happy to make recommendations to get you started, but don’t hesitate to experiment! When brewing your tea, your main considerations are tea quantity, water temperature, and steeping time. We recommend black teas to be steeped for 3 to 5 minutes in water heated to a full, rolling boil. For the best flavor, use fresh water whenever possible, and avoid overboiling. Try not to steep your tea longer than necessary, as you’ll extract undesirable bitterness from the leaves. If you want a stronger brew, don’t steep longer, just use more tea. And don’t forget to re-steep your tea leaves to get the most out of your leaf!

Health Benefits

tea-health-3.jpg

Like all true tea, black tea offers many potential health benefits. Research has found that tea (Camellia sinensis) can have many positive effects on human health, including improved cardiovascular function, cancer risk reduction, improved immune function, improved oral health, and help with weight management. Tea is also full of polyphenols, which are a class of antioxidant that help your body maintain homeostasis and balance your stress levels. Black tea specifically has been found to regulate blood sugar in diabetics better than other types of tea, according to a study done by the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Earl Grey Tea: Fact and Fiction

earl-grey-tea.jpg

Traditional Earl Grey is a blend of black tea flavored with the essence of Bergamot rind, though the name may also be used to refer to any tea—black or otherwise—that uses bergamot as a flavoring. Bergamots are small tart oranges native to southern Vietnam that are a cross between the sweet lemon and the sour orange, C. aurantium. The essential oils from their rinds are what give Earl Grey its characteristic flavor. This famous tea is named for an English prime minister, Lord Charles Grey the second, from the 1830s who first popularized its consumption. There is a popular legend that the Earl received the tea as a gift from a grateful Mandarin after one of his men saved the Mandarin (or his son, depending on which version of the story you hear) from drowning. Charming though it is, the story has no basis in fact, because the Earl never traveled to China during his life. Beyond that, no records indicate that the Bergamot was even cultivated in China at that time, so this tea would have been a very unusual gift! Nevertheless, the current Earl Grey, Lord Charles Grey the sixth, maintains that at the very least his ancestor was given the tea as a gift from a Chinese envoy.

It won’t blow you away but it’s good, solid Earl Grey.

Compostable packaging with long lasting bulk tea

Posted by AJ on 14th Jun 2023

Arbor tea was one of the only places with compostable packaging for bulk teas. Kudos to the packaging team and supplier. The packaging kept the tea in tip top shape which I then transferred to a airtight glass bottle. The tea itself was awesome. Organic Earl grey is one of my favorites and this one in particular was excellent. Lasted me for almost 3 months with almost a dose every day.

    an excellent Earl Grey

Posted by Skye on 11th Nov 2022

Since moving to America from England, I've learned to avoid Earl Grey. I think because most commercially available Earl Greys are flavored artificially, the bergamot can be a bit overpowering - like drinking perfume. However, I bought samples of all the black teas Arbor had in stock in order to do tastings with my friend, whose favorite flavor is Earl Grey, so of course I had to buy this to try (especially after reading the reviews). I'm pleasantly surprised by what a difference it makes when the flavor added to the tea is all natural and done with such finesse. Even though Earl Grey still isn't my favorite tea, I think this is one of the best Earl Greys I've ever had. I truly enjoy drinking it.

    Delicious Hot or Cold

Absolutely stunning earl grey tea! Strong enough but still subtle enough to not be overpowering. I love hot or iced as a London Fog. My new favorite!

    Earl Grey

Posted by Marilyn Mayer on 26th Jul 2021

As a lover of Earl Grey tea for over 30 years, I can testify that Arbor Tea's variety is the best. My husband echoes my opinion. A few weeks ago I was offering guests from Turkey a choice of teas & once they got a whiff of the Earl Grey they made their choice & loved it. The environmental packaging of Arbor Teas is another plus in supporting this amazing company.

Absolutely the BEST Organic Earl Gray

Posted by C. French on 3rd May 2021

I’ve been searching for years for a high quality organic black tea with enough bergamot to provide that citrus essence that tells your palate this is Earl Gray. I have finally found it in Arbor Teas. To get it right every morning I use 1 scoop from a tea measuring spoon of Arbor Tea Earl Gray leaves to 12 oz of just boiled water, steep for 5 minutes (on a timer) and then add 2 oz of Califa Almond Milk Creamer. It is perfect EVERY morning with breakfast. THANK YOU Arbor Teas.

I love this Earl Grey! It's fresh and flavorful without being overpowering; there's a slight zest to it that's very pleasant. It's definitely become part of my rotation of regular morning teas.

    Deliciously Fresh

Posted by Lacey on 10th Dec 2020

I count on this tea to wake me up every morning and sometimes in the afternoon, too! The bergamot is stronger than in other brands, which is great because that's exactly why I drink Earl Grey. I can't drink anything else :)

    Authentic Earl Grey

Posted by Kseniya Husak on 9th Nov 2020

This is an absolutely delicious tea! It's fragrant, smooth, and works extremely well in lattes/London fog. The scent is not too overpowering and lingers just a bit after each sip. Absolutely in love.

High quality, but the bergamot flavor is too strong

Posted by Omar S. on 2nd Nov 2020

I am reluctant to give this tea only 3 stars, as those who like a more pronounced bergamot flavor should be pleased with their purchase. The taste is smooth without any hint of artificiality. But the bergamot oil overwhelms the flavor of the black tea. I usually mix it 1:1 with Ceylon or Yunnan teas for a much more enjoyable experience. I'll still drink it unmixed on occasion as I sometimes crave the intensity of the flavor.

    Very high quality Earl Grey

Posted by Emily Yocom on 14th Oct 2020

This Earl Grey is clearly high quality stuff. I like it hot but I like it much better cold, so every now and then I’ll make a pitcher of it. The bergamot balances perfectly with the black tea! Not bitter at all, definitely a good quality tea. Will have to try a London fog with it next :)

    Earl Grey

Posted by Kari B on 26th Dec 2017

Pretty good cup of tea. I like mine strong and usually steep for four minutes. While it may be a bit to strong for some, I think it makes a nice bold cuppa with subtle vanilla and bergamot flavors.

    Great Tea for Mornings

Posted by Melissa on 2nd Apr 2017

I recently purchased this tea for my desk at work. The smell of this tea is amazing. It's so unlike any other earl grey I've had before. I even have a few co-workers asking to try some.

    Best Earl Grey

Posted by Rondi on 24th May 2015

I hope Arbor keeps the quality of the Earl Grey they put together!! This is now our favorite EG. It appears that they use quality leaves that are mid range in length which we like. The bergemot flavor is neither too strong or weak. My husband and I like to do a second steeping which we can do with this tea.

    Great Early Grey

Posted by JR on 5th May 2014

I was looking for an Earl Grey with a pungent bergamot aroma and flavor. This tea does not disappoint. The bergamot flavor does not get lost when you add cream. I worked in a coffee shop that sold loose leaf teas and grew to love Earl Grey from trying all their quality teas. I am glad I found this here at Arbor Teas. (P.S. They ship to Guam with reasonable shipping charges!)

    Intense Flavor

I enjoy this blended with Irish Breakfast Tea. The Bergamot flavor is a little too intense when brewed alone. I wouldn't be without this tea, though!

    I Love Earl Grey

Posted by Rachel on 23rd Aug 2013

Many of the Earl Greys you buy at the store, even if organic or fair trade, lack flavor and end up being just another tea. This one has good bergamot flavor without it tasting artificial or overwhelming. My favorite treat with Sunday brunch after church or during the week if I want a little pick-me-up.

    A great classic Earl Grey

    Posted by U. N. Owen on 22nd Apr 2013

Of all the types of teas I've tried so far, Earl Grey is generally my favorite kind. Depending on where you get it from, the flavor can vary fairly substantially; but when I think of the pure Earl Grey flavor, I think of this kind. It's got everything you want in an Earl Grey - the bergamot flavor is just the right strength, not overpowering but definitely appreciable, and it even survives a resteep or two. My favorite version of my favorite kind of tea!

If you are looking for a fragrant cup of Earl Grey, try this one! Compared with other brands, this is the best cup I have had! I like it with some cream or coconut milk (the beverage, not the kind for cooking), and sometimes with a splash of maple syrup.

The first Earl Grey I reviewed for my Earl Grey Addict review site

Posted by The Earl Grey Addict on 10th Jan 2013

It's a silly idea but I've started a blog in hopes of reviewing every Earl Grey available. I"m 9 reviews in with 5-6 more Earl Greys ready to be reviewed with countless sites ready to be ordered from. After trying many, many Earl Grey's I always return to this version. The natural flavor and aroma coupled with knowing it's organic makes it an easy pick. Depth of Flavor

Posted by Kyle Browning on 16th Dec 2012

The Bergamot in this tea is not one note like most I have tasted. There is a subtle complexity to this earl grey that reminds me of all things fruit loops cereal in the best way possible. This may seem a strange comparison but know after trying over 7 different Earl Grays this one takes the cake!

    Yummy Bergamot

Posted by Madalyn Gregory on 1st Sep 2012

I love the way bergamot smells and this tea gives off a great aroma in the bag and in the cup. It is well balanced, the bergamot is not overwhelming. I do have to be careful on the steeping time since I have made a few cups that were on the bitter side. But when it's right, it's perfect. Lingering citrus notes and a strong black tea make this one of my favorite Earl Greys.

    Great Earl Grey

Posted by Unknown on 27th Aug 2012

I got a wonderful whiff of bergamot the moment I opened the box. The tangy smell was only enhanced when I opened the pouch itself. I love that the packaging is compostable! The tea itself is smooth and aromatic. A bit of sugar really enhances the flavor for me. I can even get a couple of steepings out of it, so the value really streches.

    Top Shelf Earl Grey

Posted by Joseph Paulson on 17th Jul 2012

The dry leaf practically shines with oil of bergamot! I've never seen anything like it! The scent of the leaves hits strong but never unpleasantly so. The tea brews very well. The intoxicating scent is well balanced with the black tea behind it. I drink it black and sometimes find it a wee bit thin. But I think this would be delightful with a spot of whole milk and a scant teaspoon of sugar. I look forward to drinking this tea every Friday with my favorite pastry.

    My Favorite Earl Grey

Posted by Aysia on 15th Feb 2012

This Earl Grey has just the right amount of bergamot (natural, of course), which makes it my favorite black tea variety. The bergamot is uplifting, and never overpowering. It is a wonderful tea to start the day with.
